{"id":1190,"date":"2016-12-08T14:09:50","date_gmt":"2016-12-08T22:09:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ucore.wsu.edu\/assessment\/?page_id=1190"},"modified":"2025-10-08T12:49:54","modified_gmt":"2025-10-08T19:49:54","slug":"roots","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/ucore.wsu.edu\/assessment\/key-assessments\/roots\/","title":{"rendered":"ROOTS"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wsu-row wsu-row--single\" >\r\n    \n<div class=\"wsu-column\"  style=\"\">\r\n\t\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"block-76344d2a-50fe-4834-ae02-1d5b358d57bc\">Roots of Contemporary Issues [ROOT] Assessment<\/h1>\n\n<\/div>\r\n\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wsu-row wsu-row--single\" >\r\n    \n<div class=\"wsu-column\"  style=\"\">\r\n\t\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Introduction<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>UCORE&#8217;s <a href=\"\/faculty\/curriculum\/root\/\">Roots of Contemporary Issues&nbsp;[ROOT]<\/a> courses provide a common foundational first-year experience that prepares students to understand the world around them using historical approaches, sources, and modes of communication. [ROOT] courses advance designator student learning outcomes associated with five of the <a href=\"https:\/\/daesa.wsu.edu\/undergraduate-learning-goals\/\">WSU Undergraduate Learning Goals<\/a> (<strong>Critical Thinking<\/strong>, <strong>Information Literacy<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>Written Communication<\/strong>, <strong>Diversity<\/strong>, and <strong>Integrative Learning<\/strong>) by asking students to explore and understand the historical and global roots of various issues facing the world today. Incoming first-year students complete HISTORY 105 to satisfy [ROOT], while HISTORY 305 is intended for transfer students that need to fulfill the [ROOT] requirement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Assessment<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/wpcdn.web.wsu.edu\/wp-daesa\/uploads\/sites\/3064\/2016\/07\/panel_current-assessment-activities-v2.png\" alt=\"Visual depiction of the NILOA Transparency Framework Current Assessment Activities Component.\" width=\"62\" height=\"71\" title=\"\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Roots of Contemporary Issues [ROOT] Assessment is intended to provide [ROOT] faculty with information for program improvement, gauge student learning on [ROOT] designator learning outcomes for UCORE general education assessment, and provide evidence of UCORE\u2019s contribution towards advancing the WSU Undergraduate Learning Goals. Each semester, [ROOT] instructors are asked to submit a short report providing an assessment of student achievement of [ROOT] designator learning outcomes in their course (direct measure, using faculty expert judgement). The <a href=\"https:\/\/history.wsu.edu\/rci\/\">Roots of Contemporary Issues program<\/a>, in collaboration with the <a href=\"https:\/\/ace.wsu.edu\/\">Office of Assessment for Curricular Effectiveness (ACE)<\/a>, coordinates the assessment, reporting, and data analysis for [ROOT] Assessment reporting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Note: [ROOT] Assessment previously included the Final Papers Assessment (aligned with Critical Thinking, Information Literacy, and Integrative Learning) and the Diversity &amp; Inequality Papers Assessment (aligned with Diversity and Written Communication), where [ROOT] faculty evaluated a random sample of student&#8217;s papers from all campuses using a faculty-developed rubric. \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Evidence of Student Learning<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/wpcdn.web.wsu.edu\/wp-daesa\/uploads\/sites\/3064\/2016\/07\/panel_evidence-of-student-learning-v2.png\" alt=\"Visual depiction of the NILOA Transparency Framework Evidence of Student Learning Component.\" width=\"62\" height=\"71\" title=\"\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wsu-spacing-after--small\">Results of Roots of Contemporary Issues [ROOT] Assessment are compiled to provide a summary of student achievement of [ROOT] designator learning outcomes, as well as provide evidence of UCORE\u2019s contribution towards advancing the WSU Undergraduate Learning Goals. <em>Click on the links below to explore recent results of Roots of Contemporary Issues [ROOT] Assessment. Additionally, on average,\u00a081% of students met or exceeded expectations\u00a0on the designator learning outcome performance criteria associated with\u00a0Written Communication. UCORE\u2019s [&hellip;]\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/li>\r\n\t\t\t<li>\r\n\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/ucore.wsu.edu\/assessment\/2024\/05\/13\/assessing-student-learning-in-first-year-experience-courses-fall-2023-root-pilot-assessment-results\/\">Assessing Student Learning in First-Year Experience Courses: Fall 2023 [ROOT] Pilot Assessment Results<\/a> \r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tAs reported in the Fall 2023 [ROOT] Pilot Assessment Summary of Key Evidence for UCORE (PDF), pilot assessment results indicated that, on average, 63% of students met or exceeded expectations on the [ROOT] designator learning outcome performance criteria associated with Information Literacy. Additionally, on average, 70% of students met or exceeded expectations on the designator [&hellip;]\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/li>\r\n\t\t\t<li>\r\n\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/ucore.wsu.edu\/assessment\/2021\/08\/27\/information-literacy-integrative-learning-and-critical-thinking-achievement-at-the-first-year-level-ay-2020-21-roots-of-contemporary-issues-root-final-papers-assessment-results\/\">Information Literacy, Integrative Learning, and Critical Thinking Achievement at the First-Year Level: AY 2020-21 Roots of Contemporary Issues [ROOT] Final Papers Assessment Results<\/a> \r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tAs reported in the AY 2020-21 [ROOT] Final Papers Assessment Summary of Key Evidence for UCORE (PDF), assessment results indicated that, on average, 78% of first-year students met or exceeded expectations at the first-year undergraduate level at the end of their UCORE first-year experience [ROOT] course on rubric outcomes related to Information Literacy. Additionally, 88% [&hellip;]\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/li>\r\n\t<\/ul>\r\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Uses of Assessment<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/wpcdn.web.wsu.edu\/wp-daesa\/uploads\/sites\/3064\/2016\/07\/panel_use-of-student-learning-evidence-v2.png\" alt=\"Visual depiction of the NILOA Transparency Framework Use of Student Learning Evidence Component.\" width=\"62\" height=\"71\" title=\"\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>The Roots of Contemporary Issues Steering Committee and program faculty review results of Roots of Contemporary Issues [ROOT] Assessment and suggest actions for improved assessment or use to inform decision-making. The Roots of Contemporary Issues program also works closely with the WSU Libraries&#8217; research services librarians to use assessment to develop and refine information literacy curricula. For more information about this partnership, see&nbsp;<a href=\"\/assessment\/2017\/01\/05\/research-services-librarians-conduct-and-use-information-literacy-assessment\/\">Research Services Librarians Conduct and Use Information Literacy Assessment<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wsu-spacing-after--small\">Below are some examples of how student learning evidence from Roots of Contemporary Issues [ROOT] Assessment contributes to decision-making intended to support student learning and quality undergraduate education.<\/p>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wsu-news-list mw--80ch\">\r\n\t\t\t<li>\r\n\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/ucore.wsu.edu\/assessment\/2025\/10\/29\/using-root-assessment-results-to-improve-ucore-first-year-experience-courses\/\">Using [ROOT] Assessment Results to Improve UCORE First-Year Experience Courses<\/a> \r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tAssessment activities and results are intended to inform regular faculty reflection and discussion about effective teaching, learning, and curricula, and ultimately contribute to decision-making to support student learning. For example, rubric use and participation in norming sessions can deepen a common understanding of program goals among faculty, and, over time, can help focus instruction and improve [&hellip;]\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/li>\r\n\t\t\t<li>\r\n\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/ucore.wsu.edu\/assessment\/2016\/12\/13\/using-final-papers-assessment-project-results-to-improve-ucore-first-year-experience-root-courses\/\">Using Final Papers Assessment Project Results to Improve UCORE First-Year Experience [ROOT] Courses<\/a> \r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tThe Final Papers Assessment Project results provide Roots of Contemporary Issues [ROOT] faculty with information about students\u2019 grasp of program outcomes.
